The City of Sioux Falls’ new 80,000 square feet administration building that opened in 2018 was the largest project in a longstanding relationship between Interstate Office Products and the City. This project was the first major new city administration building since City Hall’s original construction in 1935. This design was the product of a vision by the City to provide new homes to multiple departments and to centralize many of the public-facing services that the City provides.

 

Design and Product Selection

Marcia Young, Interior Designer/Account Manager, has a long relationship working with the City and its various department heads as their furniture provider. IOP’s work with the City dates to the 1990s, and the City Center was the latest project in this history. Marcia, in collaboration with partners from Steelcase, conducted focus groups with various departments to understand each department’s individual needs for their spaces. This led to a design that promoted the unique workflows and processes of each department and enabled them to collaborate efficiently within their teams. Marcia, Interior Designer Abby Tufvesson, and the City team developed a floorplan consisting of workstations, private offices, conference and collaboration rooms, breakrooms, public spaces, and training rooms. Each space was thoughtfully designed to support ergonomics and employee well-being with ample privacy and access to light.

Project Management and Installation

A phased project, IOP worked with the City and general contractor to develop an installation schedule by floor that enabled a seamless client move-in. IOP worked by department area to get new furniture installed and existing pieces relocated from City Hall to minimize departmental downtime. The IOP operations team developed a daily schedule so the City knew when each department was moving.

IOP’s installation crew provided real-time updates to the client as needed on any necessary modifications to the schedule based on the construction’s actual progress. This highly skilled team completed each phase on time with any punch-list items noted and followed-up on in a timely fashion.
